Donald Blake, his secret identity, was transferred from Mjolnir to Stormbreaker, leaving Thor as Thor permanently and allowing Bill to transform from his horse-like warrior mode to, wonderfully, an bright orange alien with no nose. (In a twist, Simonson/Odin used the creation of Stormbreaker to do away with a piece of Thor comic book lore: the enchantment that transformed Thor into mild-mannered Dr. As such, Bill was considered worthy enough not only to lift Mjolnir but use it in battle, ultimately winning the respect of Odin and being awarded a hammer of his very own. Simonson’s humor was at play in the circumstances surrounding Stormbreaker’s creation in comic book mythology it was created after Thor was defeated in battle - on two separate occasions - by an alien with the name Beta Ray Bill, who was the sole defender of his race, protecting their cryogenically frozen bodies as their spaceship explores the galaxies in search of a new home. 339, the third issue of the beloved run of issues by writer/artist Walter Simonson.Īrguably more than co-creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Simonson’s presence was felt throughout Thor: Ragnarok it was his work that informed the use of both Hela (Cate Blanchett) and Skurge, the Executioner (Karl Urban), and the humor of the movie more closely resembled the wit of Simonson than the bombast of Lee and Kirby. Although the name lacks the Nordic ring of Thor’s previous hammer, “Stormbreaker” nonetheless is likely to have a familiar ring for comic book fans, because it’s the alternate hammer forged on Odin’s orders in 1984’s Thor No. The weapon comes courtesy of Eitri (Peter Dinklage), and it allows him to return to Earth just in time to help his friends in a battle in Wakanda. ![]() In Infinity War, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) - accompanied by Groot and Rocket - travels to Nidavellir, where a new weapon is forged for him: an ax called Stormbreaker. Worst of all, the planet itself is dying. Their struggle to survive in the post-apocalyptic landscape is overseen by the massive Tree of Life: a plant whose world-spanning roots have helped to sustain all that is left.ĭanger is ever-present on the horizon in the world of Biomutant: dead zones remain, tribes don’t always see eye-to-eye, biohazard areas splatter the land, bandits and hostile mutated wildlife threaten villages and travelers alike, and a fearsome predator from the past returns to stalk its prey. Some even became sentient, forming their own societies amidst the ruined wreckage of the old world. The left-behind animal life began to evolve and mutate in surprising, accelerated ways thanks to the effects of the environmental catastrophes looming over the planet. As it turns out, that was only the beginning of the story. I don't think Biomutant is a great game, but it's a game that is far from a complete disaster and one that still manages to consistently offer a good time.īiomutant is out on May 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.In the far distant past of a world rather eerily reminiscent of our own, a power-hungry conglomerate known as Toxanol polluted the planet to the point where it became uninhabitable, and the people fled from it into the far reaches of space. It's not a review, though, so you can't do that, and maybe you've seen something you like the look of in our video chat. If this were a Biomutant review, which it isn't as I'm probably only about 10-15 hours into the game (a game that is threatening to be significantly longer than that), there'd be a fairly middling score at the end that you'd have glanced at and then made up your mind that Experiment 101's sprawling adventure isn't up to much and is one to be avoided. It's worth noting that the game doesn't have any specific Xbox Series X or PS5 enhancements as of yet, but the developer has suggested news on that is coming. On Series X it nips along at a fairly smooth 60 FPS and the colours are very pleasing to the eye. ![]() As I tried to convey via what seemed like a poor telephone link, Biomutant is a game that has many flaws, but none of them stopped me enjoying this often gorgeous game. Hopefully you've watched our lengthy chat above and come away with a better idea of what Biomutant is. I don't want to spoil what Dorrani and I discuss in our video chat below, but I will say that Biomutant is one of the most uniquely odd games I've played in a long time. Biomutant is an ambitious open-world action RPG, but is it any good? ![]() ![]() It kicks off with a Normandy-like beach invasion, followed by general tear-assing around in a Warthog jeep with your rowdy marine pals, and then its a great mix of indoor and outdoor action, culminating in a showdown with a one-hit-and-youre-dead blade-wielding alien. Ultimate moment: The Silent Cartographer level has to be one of our favorites in any game, ever. Dead-on controls, an epic story, and deviously smart enemies well, smart for alien bugs at least are just a small part of Halo's greatness. The game that sold a few million Xboxes is still the best first-person shooter you can play from the comfort of your La-Z-Boy, and its even better with a few (or a dozen) like-minded wannabe-space-marine friends. Blame Halo for inspiring a new generation of glorified pest exterminators. ![]() I've always really liked the character models of the Halo menagerie, but even so, everything seems flat and lifeless compared to the efforts of every other shooter on the market.Īsk any kid what he (or she!) wants to be when he grows up and every last one of the little terrors gives the same answer: cybernetic space marine. Oh, and the menu systems pissed me off too - MS still seem convinced that everyone will be playing with one of their pads, and to get my mouse inverted (yes, I know), I had to traverse seven screens, which may not sound like much, but felt like I was ascending Kilimanjaro.Īs for the graphics, well, I can't deny they're far crisper and cleaner than the Xbox version (you can increase the resolution and everything), but that doesn't stop them looking dated. As for the persistent lack of co-op play on PC, well, that's just as unforgivable as it was last time around. The two new maps on offer (Uplift and District) are pretty intense - but, I'm sorry, if there are redeeming features in that one with the giant turbine that every bugger plays, then I've yet to find them. Multiplayer is what sealed the deal with the living-room format, and all the old arenas and downloadable content resurface here -ready, willing and able for you to strap yourself into MS's bulky LIVE system and an undeniably giggle-packed game, despite a marked variation in quality as you pass between the 23 maps. All getting in the way of action you can't help but feel affection for despite it all. The dull, obtuse and nonsensical storyline (the low point of which is a Flood hive mind ripped straight from Little Shop Of Horrors), the sudden ending, the cop-out that was the Earth invasion, the crap bits where you play as an alien Arbiter, the endless retread of gameplay already done to death in the original. But due to the 'OMG - online multiplayer on Xbox! This is the future!' effect of its original launch, people tend to forget its multitude of sins. The bare bones of Halo 2 are great - its shooty, hidey gameplay, amusing physics and some genuinely excellent set-pieces (notably jumping onboard the giant spider mech in an otherwise barren attack on Earth) still get the adrenalin pumping. That is, at least until the advent of DX10 and the whine of a million gamers opening their wallets and pouring coins into the cavernous maw of Bill Gates.īut whatever you think about Vista, and whether you consider MS a risen messiah or a ruthless hijacker of fun, I think that while we're still holding hands (and we are still holding hands), we can all agree that releasing the ancient Halo 2 as a flagship title for both Vista and Games for Windows LIVE is a f***ing stupid idea. A conversion too that now appears dull and ageing, and what's more can only be run on a Vista platform bereft of anything else worth playing apart from Geometry Wars. Something you can say, though, is that there was no need to keep the PC community waiting three long years for a conversion. He is referred to as "daroga" by Erik (daroga means "police chief" in Persian), and at one point he helped Erik escape the death penalty enacted by the Persian Shah (Erik knew too many state secrets). He helps Raoul recover Christine from Erik, but is only somewhat successful (Erik gives up Christine on his own accord). The Persian is a figure from Erik's tragic past who provides information about him. She is described as being relatively self-centered, with black eyes and hair, and a very thin body. She is Christine's friend, but she also helps her mother in doing Erik's bidding. At one point, she is fired by the managers of the Opera, but she regains her position after Erik intervenes. Raoul is the Viscount of Chagny and Christine's childhood friend. ![]() Christine is the love interest of both Erik and Raoul, and Erik's jealousy over her love for Raoul is a major source of conflict throughout the novel. Erik manipulates Christine into thinking he is the angel of music, and is thus able to gain her trust. Her mother died while she was young her father, with whom she had a very close relationship, died a few years later, but he passed down his passion for music to Christine and told her tales of an angel of music. Christine DaaeĬhristine is the main female protagonist of the novel. He is childish and gives the impression that he is usually one to have things his way (a tendency that is evident in Raoul as well). ![]() Erik falls in love with Christine but expresses his feelings in harmful and at times disastrous manners, such as sabotaging performances and taking Raoul captive. He is physically deformed and may be interpreted either as a tragic hero or a tragic villain. Erik, otherwise known as the Phantom, is the tragic titular character of the novel. |
